Another fantastic video from Mr Parr. This video is a little advanced for Year 5 as we have learnt about the 3 main states but it is interesting.

Today, we looked at the properties of solids, liquids and gases. In table groups, pupils had to sort statements into the correct area. Afterwards, we looked at different objects and talked about if they were a solid, liquid or gas.
Summary: Pupils could not decide if the following items were solid, liquid or gas.
If you have researched at home, comment on this post with your findings Today, we learnt about floods and then produced a report about the causes of floods. To view the videos, please click on the link below:
This week we have been writing our own Kenning poems. We began by guessing the subject of existing Kennings and then used it to help use write our own. Below is a class kenning we created. Exam tester

(By Year 5, St George’s Seville) We have been learning all about the water cycle and completing different tasks about water. We used a glass, some warm water and ice to create a mini version of the water cycle
We kept a record of how much water we use in one day. Some pupils worked it out for just them, others looked at the whole family.
We then got into a line, starting with the person who uses the least amount of water, to the most. We went to the planetarium to consolidate our learning on the Sun, Earth and Moon. While we were there, we also looked at other sections of the museum.
Today, we ready a poem called 'From a Railway Carriage'. We read it through and tried to understand what it was about. We used pictures to help us understand each line. We finally understood the poem was about a steam train and then looked at some of the language features used.
Today, we went learnt about the 8 Moon phases and then made posters about them. Then we used biscuits to show our understanding.
This video explains a lot about the Sun, Earth and Moon topic we are studying. Today, we went outside and modelled the Earth´s rotation and orbit paths. This week, we have been learning how to calculate the perimeter and area of a shape quickly. We have used multiplying techniques and thinking skills. We used a torch and an object to look at how the shape of shadows change due to movement. We then linked this with how it proves either the Sun or Earth moves and drew a graph of our results.
We have been planning an investigation to see if we can prove the Sun appears to move across the sky. We also looked at the website below to help us. If you have forgotten, have another go! In Literacy, some pupils learned how to use prepositions of place using the picture below. Others learned how to use prepositions of time using at, in, on.

This week we have been consolidating our learning in Literacy. We have been looking at non-fiction reading books and using the word/sentence features we have been studying this half term.
As part of our Christianity topic, we learned all about pancake day. We learned about Lent and the Christian beliefs, we went outside to measure the largest pancake ever made and we ate some pancakes so we knew what they were like.
We have been learning about the relevant sizes of the Sun, Earth and Moon. Most people thought that if the Sun was the size of a beach ball, the Earth would be the size of a football and the Moon would be the size of a pea.
We later found out that if the Sun was the size of a beach ball, the Earth would be the size of pea and the Moon would be the size of a grain of sand. We have been learning how to use fronted clauses, embedded clauses and subordinate clauses in our writing and thinking about the impact this has on the reader.
