Literacy - Analysing songs

12/6/2014

My literacy group have been working with songs over the past few weeks. We have looked at artists like Bob Dylan and The Beetles and discussed the hidden messages in their songs. We have researched the 60's and matched the events at the time with the songs.

Today, we were looking at the metaphors written in the song 'A hard rain's a-gonna fall' by Bob Dylan. Each group then picked a line from the song and created two pictures. The first picture was what the song represented (the metaphor) and the second picture was as if they had taken the line literally.

Group 1 - lyric: A hard rain's a-gonna fall
Group 2 - lyric: I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin'
Group 3 - lyric: I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
Group 4 - lyric: Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley

To help us improve our use of adjectives, we were in teams and took it in turns to look at a picture of a monster and had to describe it to the rest of our team. They then had to try and draw the picture we were describing.

This week we have been learning about Sound. We have learnt:
  • Sound is made by a vibration
  • Sound is measured in Decibels (dB)
  • Sound waves move through the air
  • Light travels quicker than sound
  • Sound travels quicker through water than the air
  • Every object absorbs some of the sound
  • Sound travels at 330 meters per second
  • Light travels at a speed of 300 million meters per second
  • Different parts of the ear, such as the Cochlea, Canal, Drum.
  • The bones that vibrate in your ear are the smallest bones in your body
  • Your ear converts air vibrations into liquid vibrations so it can reach your brain quicker
